An emergency escape system that could fly astronauts to safety in the event of an emergency on the launchpad or early in flight is an important part of NASA's new Orion crew vehicle which is planned to replace the Space Shuttle. NASA has decided to develop a new technology in case there should be problems with the traditional tower-style escape system.
