Canes Venatici
The Hunting Dogs
The Brighter Stars of Canes Venatici
Origin of the Constellation
The Hunting Dogs represent a modern constellation created by the Polish astronomer Johannes Hevelius in his sky chart of 1687. The dogs are now usually portrayed as being held by leashes by Boötes in his guise as the Bear Driver. The dogs are chasing after the Greater Bear in a perpetual race around the Pole.
